All three colors were used by
the Catholic Church throughout
history and thus continued to
be used in relation to Mardi
Gras which was Catholic
in origin. (from Wiki)
 Gold color symbolizes power
and authority.
Green color symbolizes
destiny while Purple color

 For Fastelavn children line up
during the festivities to hit
a barrel which hides  a lot of candy
  inside. Scandinavian style pinata.
Whoever hits the last of piece of
the barrel will be crowned cat king
or cat queen and put on a crown for
the rest of the day.
The kids will dress up and visit the
neighbors and sing
  " Fastelavn is my name,
buns I want. If I get no buns,
I will make trouble.
Buns up, buns down
buns in my tummy.
If I get no buns, I will make
trouble."

  Mame maki

The symbolic action of throwing
beans is known as mame-maki,
and is done to drive out demons
and invite good luck for the new
year. While throwing beans, the
family will yell “Oni wa soto
(Demons out), fuku wa uchi!
(Happiness in)”  Some believe
that eating the number of beans
equal to their age will bring
them health and happiness.
(means drive away evil matter)
